Tissue Culture Media Types

Murashige and Skoog, MS medium ( 1962):
Is the most suitable and commonly used basic tissue culture medium for plants regeneration from
tissues and callus.
Developed for tobacco culture.
Contains high salts (High N & K)
Purpose: for whole plants regeneration

Gamborg B5:
Developed for Soybean culture.
Has lesser amount of nitrates particularly ammonium salt than MS medium.
Purpose: for callus and suspension culture

White medium (1963):
Has lower concentration of salts than MS medium.
Purpose: for tissue culture of tomato roots.

Nitsch and Nitsch medium (1969):
Purpose: for anther culture.
Has salt concentration intermediate to that of MS and white media.

Woody plant medium (WPM):
Purpose: to counteract salt sensitivity of some woody species.
Shenck and Hildebrandt, SH medium (1972):
Developed for the callus culture of mnocots & dicots.
