Propagation by Layering

Layering involves the growth of roots on a stem, while the stem is still attached to the mother plant. There are two methods of layering common used for vegetative propagation of horticultural plants; air (marcotting) and ground layering.

Procedure:

1. Prepare a moist, well aerated rooting medium (perlite + peatmoss)
2. Stem is girdled with a sharp knife (make sure you do not cut the wood)
3. Scrape the remnants of phloem and cambium
4. Apply IBA (if necessary)
5. Apply rooting medium
6. Wrap the stem with a polyethylene, 20 x 25cm, plastic cover
